1906-12 castle Pesch for Prince J. von Arenberg in Meerbusch
1905-1914: early years in the Rhineland
In Breuhaus’ first productive phase, residences and country houses assumed by far the largest part of his work. From 1918 on he also designed a few industrial buildings. His earliest buildings still are inspired by fading historism. Elements of contemporary reform architecture, such as bay windows, boarded gables and smoothly plastered facades had been established by 1907. For many of F.A.B.’s buildings the “Heimatschutzstil” (style based on local traditions) became formative. The architect freely interpreted the baroque building tradition, His projects in the German region Bergisches Land and his castle buildings are only a few examples illustrating the architect’s free interpretation of the baroque building tradition. F.A.B.’s plans for large country residences before 1914 furthermore were clearly influenced by the “English country house style".
In the beginning of his architectural activities, Breuhaus cooperated with his brother-in-law Hans Kunz (*1876). Roughly between 1908 and 1910, Breuhaus was also active in joint practice with Carl Mauve in Düsseldorf. Before 1914, he probably briefly was associated with the architect Carl G. Bensel (1878-1949) in Düsseldorf.
