1947-1960: Grand Seigneur in postwar-Germany
Besides some ideas as to standardised reconstruction projects (see for example the prefabricated house "Form 12" and the "central building") Breuhaus' planning activities around 1947/48 exactly started there again where they had stopped in 1941. For the early postwar period, he planned amazingly spacious country houses and mansions for industrialists in Germany and abroad. Around 1950, Breuhaus moved his studio from Bad Kissingen to Cologne. In the function as office manager, Johann Gabriel Rey (*1895), who already had a leading part in Breuhaus’ Berlin studio in the late 1930s and who followed Breuhaus to Bad Kissingen in 1950, worked there for him again.
With the completion of his own, notably modern domicile "Lille Brøndegaard" (Danish for: small fountain garden) in Rhöndorf near Bad Honnef, F.A.B. definitively moved back to his Rhenish origins in 1952. He stayed in the Cologne area until his death in 1960.
As early as 1953, Breuhaus was able to present a comprehensive illustrated book of his postwar projects. Besides manors and country houses, some commercial buildings, hotels and administrative buildings for insurance companies, banks, commerce and industry took a more dominant part in his work. Apart from a few vanguard exceptional buildings as his own house in Rhöndorf, the majority of his buildings can basically be divided in two stylistic groups: in using quarry stone, whitewashed bricks, dark wood and thatched roofs, a first and smaller group caught up with the "Heimatschutzstil" of his conservative designs of the late 1930s. A second group clearly stands in connection with contemporary postwar development: while the publicly visible street facades mostly suggested a simplicity typical of that time, the modesty displayed to the outside did not find its equivalent in the interior. According to the demands of wealthy clients, his ground-floor plans were still very ample and designed for representation. Décor and furnishing - aspects that self-evidently had always been part of Breuhaus’ overall concept - ranged from solidity to luxurious elegance.
Even if most of his single-family homes followed the current concept of living at one level and thus the idea of the American bungalow, Breuhaus’ clients still preferred in most of the times a more or less inclined roof to a flat one. Very few of his plans showed a tendency towards the "international style". Some of his projects published shortly after his death in 1961 clearly pointed out the modern architectural concept of the 1960s. As the Heidelberg manor of the industrialist Dr. U. G., built in 1960-61, they had supposedly been under the influence of Breuhaus’ last office manager Artur Gérard, who had been responsible for the posthumous realization of Breuhaus’ last projects.
