1934 competition design banking house for the Sümerbank in Ankara
1932-41: The Berlin years
With his removal from Düsseldorf to Berlin in 1932, Breuhaus finally ranked among the most prominent and most wanted architects in Germany. In the vicinity of his own house "Lille Ø" (Danish for: small island), built in 1934, around 50 country and single-family homes of different sizes had been created in the Berlin exclusive residential areas of Schmargendorf, Dahlem, Grunewald and Westend in the following years. It seems as if F.A.B. became, like in his beginnings, once more active as a "terrain developer". Out of extensive gardens and parks surrounding ancient residences, he parcelled lots of land and covered them with houses according to his plans. Once again the versatility of his planning concept was proven. According to clients’ wishes, his plans turned out to be sometimes more sometimes less traditional, matter-of-fact, elegant, native or luxurious-representative. Under the pressure of the national socialist building policy, a definitely stronger inclination towards traditionalistic structural shapes on F.A.B.s side cannot be denied after 1935.
A meticulous integration into the surrounding garden and a most detailed planning of furnishing – mostly very elegant – were aspects that all buildings within this period had in common. Despite all stylistic changeability on the outside, Breuhaus’ handwriting always stayed readable in his ground-floor plans that were characterized by generous living halls in the center, often flanked by round or elliptic dining rooms.
Due to his excellent reputation as ship architect since the "Bremen", Breuhaus received more than a dozen ship furnishing orders before 1933, also for war ships by the rearming German navy and for the furnishing of two airplanes.
In those years, the leading force and office manager of Breuhaus’ studio had been the young architect Cäsar F. Pinnau (1906-1988), who immediately after having finished his studies started working in Breuhaus’ Düsseldorf studio in 1930. Due to this collaboration, Pinnau gained a life-long reputation as ship architect and was hired by Albert Speer, the general building official of the "Reichshauptstadt" Berlin as architect in charge of the indoor furnishings of Adolf Hitler’s "Neue Reichskanzlei" (new imperial office) in 1937. Breuhaus, on the contrary, had been imposed by a prohibition to practice his profession as architect and retired to Bad Kissingen.
